STUDIO ART 2                                     5 Credits Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: Art 1                                        Full Year Course

Studio Art 2 provides opportunities for more advanced applications of the basic elements of art and principles of design. Divided into four segments, each term concentrates on a different area of studio art, including: drawing, painting, printmaking and three-dimensional design. Students demonstrate a higher level of skill, deal with more complex assignments, and respond to works of art in more  sophisticated ways.

PHOTOGRAPHY         2.5 Credits                    Grades 11-12

Prerequisite: Art 1 & Art 2 or Introduction to Film and Video & Intermediate Video Production Semester

Photography students use black and white film and 35mm cameras to learn proper film exposure with natural lighting. In the darkroom, students focus on the fundamentals of developing film and printing

using photographic paper. Emphasis is placed on students' ability to select interesting and meaningful photographic compositions. Students supply their own 35mm adjustable lens camera or borrow a camera from the Visual ARts Department.

A little about me...

My name is Joy Schilling.  I have been working as an Art Teacher in Wakefield since 1985.  I am the Visual Arts Department Coordinator at the high school where I teach Studio Art and Photography.  Over the years,  I have taught almost all levels of students in seven of Wakefield's schools including the High School, Atwell, Greenwood, Dolbeare, Franklin, Yeuell, and Doyle. I am also a life long resident of Wakefield and a WHS graduate from the Class of 1980.

I have been creating and studying Art for most of my life. I have a Master of Science degree in Art Education with a concentration in Museum Education from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, MA. 1994. I also have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Art Education with a minor in Art History from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA. 1985.

I am an active member of The Arts Collaborative of Wakefield. Our mission is to support the local Wakefield visual artist and craftsmen community. Goals include providing opportunities for artists to network, meet and share ideas, as well as, to create partnership programs between local artists and businesses. As a group, we maintain an online registry of Wakefield artists.  The website showcases individual artists and their work. I am also a member of the Albion Cultural Exchange located in the heart of downtown Wakefield at 9 Albion Street.   Our goal is to redevelop the existing building into a permanent arts and cultural center. Our main floor gallery is open for various art and cultural events.  We offer live music, art education and open studio gallery events.
